ABOUT US

The purpose of this project is to increase access to the amount of fresh and health foods in the community. Midway is a rural community that has been identified as a food dessert, limiting choices for the community. Limited accesses to fresh foods; families are prone to rely o fast foods and processed foods. Midway has been identified as a food desert due to the lack of grocery stores within convenient traveling distance. The community had developed certain economic conditions that drive local markets and grocery stores out of the community. Many residents do not own their own cars, forcing them to rely on public transportation and taxi cabs and find fresh food and healthier options, driving the monetary cost to exceed financial limitations.

The relationship between poor nutrition and diets high in processed and fast foods have been linked to higher risk for obesity, heart disease, diabetes and hypertension; these conditions are among the few. These chronic health issues are an epidemic in Midway, raising the need for prescription medications and increasing health care cost.

The mission of The Midway Garden Program is to establish coordinated community gardens in two sectors of the community. Our role would be to coordinate the establishment and maintenance of both gardens in conjunction with the residents of the neighborhood where the gardens are located. The program would also be responsible for providing sustainable agricultural practices and to encourages and promote less sedentary lifestyles for the residents of Midway.
